    • How does soundproofing work?

In accordance with the soundproofing concept validated by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation in September 2017, Genève Aéroport annually selects real estate objects eligible for soundproofing works. They are selected based on their level of exposure to noise. The sites are then grouped by municipalities (Vernier, Meyrin, Satigny, Bellevue, Genthod, Versoix, Pregny-Chambésy and Grand-Saconnex).

For detailed information refer to the Concept of soundproofing measures of premises sensitive to noise around Genève Aéroport.

    • Who can benefit from soundproofing?

The buildings concerned and located in the relevant perimeter (as per point 3 of the soundproofing concept) must meet five conditions to qualify for the soundproofing measures:

      1. The building includes at least one noise sensitive room.

      2. At least one of the emission limit values is exceeded (see annex 5 of the Noise Abatement Ordinance)

      3. Where the building is located within the perimeter of the former NNI areas, the NNI area must have been built, modified or converted before 15 January 1979 or the application for building permit must have been validly lodged with the competent authority before 15 January 1979, except in the case of force majeure.

      4. Where the building is located outside the perimeter of the former NNI areas but within the VLI perimeter, the VLI perimeter must have been built, modified or converted before 12 June 2001 or the application for the building permit must have been validly filed before 12 June 2001, except in the case of force majeure.

      5. The building envelope (facades or roof) should meet the requirements set forth in the specifications and recommendations.

    • What premises are concerned?

Only premises whose use is sensitive to noise (as per Annex 5 of the soundproofing concept) can benefit from soundproofing measures, namely:

      • Rooms in apartments except kitchens without living space, sanitary facilities, storage rooms and entrance halls;

      • Operating premises in companies where people regularly spend a long time.

Are excluded the rooms for livestock husbandry and rooms with significant operating noise.

    • What are the main steps of the soundproofing programme?

      1. Contacting the owners announcing the opening of a file.

      2. Expertise and evaluation of the premises in order to establish a technical assessment.

      3. After validation, the evaluation report is sent to the owner.

      4. On this basis, the owner gets several cost estimates according to the specifications indicated in the report.

      5. Cost estimates are sent by the owner to Genève Aéroport or its agent for final control and validation; any additional costs are the owner’s responsibility.

      6. Before signing the cost estimate, an agreement is signed between Genève Aéroport and the owner, laying down the general conditions of sound improvement.

      7. After signature of the agreement, the cost estimate is accepted and the owner mandates the company selected for the execution of works within maximum three months.

      8. At the end of the works, Genève Aéroport or its authorised representative examine the works in relation to the initial specifications. Minutes are drafted in this respect.

      9. Upon the signing of the minutes, Genève Aéroport will proceed to the settlement or the reimbursement of bills related to the works.

    • Can I request soundproofing measures for my accommodation as tenant?

Only owners are entitled to initiate requests for soundproofing. Tenants are welcome to point out any noise annoyance.

    • I have undertaken renovation works on my windows but these do not meet the acoustic performance requirements of the specifications and recommendations of the airport. How does this happen?

Genève Aéroport will propose new targeted works to achieve the required soundproofing performance and will bear the costs of these works..

      Vidéo L'aéroport va insonoriser 3'000 logements d'ici à 10 ans

    • Who pays the costs of asbestos removal in the event of positive asbestos control in the work area?

If the diagnosis of asbestos before works is entirely incumbent on Genève Aéroport, the elements concerned by the soundproofing works and the costs relating to the treatment of asbestos are the owner’s responsibility.
