Modernization of the Geneva Airport railway station
The modernization of the Geneva Airport SBB station has been completed. Access to the platforms and trains has been made easier and the station is now brighter, thanks in particular to its new ceiling representing the Swiss Alps.
Dating from 1987, the Geneva Airport station welcomes around 17,000 people every day and is a first impression of Switzerland for many tourists. The SBB has completed the modernization work that began in September 2020. The station is now more welcoming and better adapted to the requirements of modern mobility.
The platforms and their accesses - stairs, escalators and elevators - have been renovated and transformed. The platforms have been raised (from 42 to 55 cm) in order to offer more comfort when entering the trains, especially for people with disabilities, families with strollers and passengers with suitcases.
The atmosphere in the underground station is more pleasant and bright: a new ceiling symbolizes the different reliefs of the Swiss mountains. It was developed specifically for this project. It took two years to design and produce it. The relief was designed in such a way that no two slats of the ceiling are identical. Finally, sound insulation was added above the slats to improve the acoustic comfort of the station.
The platform floor was also lightened and new wooden benches were installed. New lighting and modern information panels complete the installation. Railway engineering work (track renewal) and compliance work for fire protection were also carried out. The work was completed on December 10, 2022, for the implementation of the new 2023 timetable. The project budget amounted to approximately CHF 40 million.
The Geneva Airport SBB station is currently served by 5 trains per hour and per direction. As of the timetable change on December 11, 2022, an additional train (Regioexpress) will stop there once an hour on weekends. This will give passengers from the stations served, such as Bex, Villeneuve, Renens, Allaman, Rolle, Gland or Coppet, a direct link to the airport.
The Geneva-Airport station also hosts the departures of the Verbier Express train during the weekends and holidays of the winter season. The Verbier Express connects Geneva Airport with Le Châble (Verbier/4 Vallées ski resort); more information on cff.ch/verbierexpress.
