Update of the list of states and territories at risk

09.10.2020

On Friday 9 October 2020, Switzerland decided to further extend the list of states and territories at risk. This implies an obligation of quarantine for any person returning from these regions on Swiss territory.

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) added, on Friday 9 October, three Italian regions (Campania, Sardinia and Veneto) in addition to Liguria, two new Austrian states (Länder) and, in Germany, the states of Hamburg and Berlin. Several other countries, such as Canada, Russia and Tunisia are now on the list of states at risk.

The entry into force of the mandatory quarantine on return from these regions and countries is set for 12 October.

In September, the FOPH had registered ten French regions, eight French overseas territories and many European countries on the list of states and countries at risk.

Passengers landing in Geneva and coming from these areas at risk must therefore respect a ten-day quarantine. They must report to the competent health authorities within 48 hours. During their flight, they will have first filled in a traceability sheet issued by the airline they have travelled with.

People who enter Switzerland only to cross it are considered to be in transit. Therefore, they are not subject to quarantine.

Passengers who have travelled to a risk area for professional or medical reasons and who have not been able to postpone their trip are exempt from quarantine. However, the stay must not have exceeded five days. People who have stayed in a state or area at high risk of infection for less than 24 hours, as a transit passenger, are not affected by quarantine.

This is not an entry ban and therefore there is no closure of borders. There will also be no additional border controls.

Border areas are excluded from this list. There is therefore no impact for cross-border workers who can continue to move from one country to another for professional reasons.
