With the end of most travel restrictions, air services from Genève Aéroport are picking up. For the 2022 summer season (end of March to end of October), 43 airlines will serve 121 destinations, mainly in Europe, but also in Africa, the Middle East and North America.
The long-haul network made a comeback during the winter season, which is now coming to an end. All four transatlantic routes are back in operation: New York (Newark) and Washington with United, New York (JFK) with SWISS and Montreal with Air Canada. Frequencies are expected to increase gradually, making these routes almost daily by the summer.
In the Persian Gulf, Qatar Airways is returning to Geneva after a two-year interruption due to the pandemic. From 27 March, four flights a week will be offered to Doha, with excellent connections to Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean. This flight joins the routes to Dubai and Abu Dhabi operated by Emirates and Etihad respectively. Ethiopian Airlines is also present with three rotations per week to Addis Ababa.
In the Middle East, Royal Jordanian also returns for the summer 2022 with two flights per week from Amman, adding to the routes operated by MEA, El Al, Egyptair, Saudia and Kuwait Airways. The network to North Africa is also being significantly expanded. On the Moroccan side: Agadir (easyJet), Casablanca (RAM and Air Arabia) and Marrakech (easyJet and SWISS). A major innovation in Tunisia is the launch of Enfida-Hammamet by easyJet (3 flights per week), in addition to Djerba (Tunisair and SWISS) and Tunis (Tunisair and Nouvelair). Hurghada in the Red Sea is still accessible with easyJet and SWISS.
Based on the airlines' schedule, strong demand for Greece and Turkey is expected. New flights to Corfu (easyJet) will be added to the already extensive coverage of mainland Greece and the islands by Aegean, easyJet and SWISS. On the Turkish side, the key destination of Antalya will again be served by several airlines, and Izmir will have more flights with the arrival of easyJet as well.
Overall, the major tourist countries will have a high-quality service from Geneva, with many regional cities linked by direct flights. This summer, 14 destinations will be covered in France, including four in Corsica, 12 different destinations in Spain and 11 in Italy. The new airline ITA will also significantly increase its flights to Rome-Fiumicino and resume a direct service to Milan-Linate from April 2022.
For those looking for originality and a change of scenery, we recommend "niche" markets with direct flights from Genève Aéroport: for example, the Azores or Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean (SWISS), Iceland in the far north (Icelandair) or Malta in the Mediterranean (Air Malta and easyJet).
In total, for this summer, the two locally based carriers will further consolidate their offer. easyJet will be serving more than 70 destinations, while adding new Airbus A321neo aircraft to its fleet. SWISS, meanwhile, will be operating more than 40 direct routes, thanks in part to its latest-generation Airbus A220 aircraft.
