Athletes from around the world arrive at Genève Aéroport

Lausanne and nearby venues in the Alps and Jura will host the 3rd Youth Olympic Games from the 9th to the 22nd January 2020. On Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, 550 and 210 young sportspeople (of 1880 athletes from 79 participating countries) arrived in Switzerland via Genève Aéroport, the « official airport » and « official supplier » of the games.

Travelling from Australia, Asia, North America and many European countries, the delegations were greeted with a joyful atmosphere in Genève Aéroport terminal. Planned over several months, a large-scale logistical operation has been put in place to facilitate the lives of the athletes aged between 15 and 18, welcome delegations, make transit fast and simple, and organise transport to the competition venues.

Many Genève Aéroport collaborators and partners, including management, were involved in the planning, which provides logistical and operational support to the many YOG 2020 volunteers part of the welcome team. The large second wave of arrivals is scheduled for the 15th and 16th January.

In the run-up to the event, on the 18th September 2019 Genève Aéroport hosted the Olympic flame. What’s more, a 100% electric bus decorated in the colours of « Lausanne 2020 » has been transporting airport passengers on the runway for several months, getting them in the mood for the event.

André Schneider, Director General of Genève Aéroport said:

« We are fulfilling our role for this important event, by providing our services to guarantee diplomatic, tourism and sports activities in the region. Genève Aéroport is proud to give athletes the warm welcome they expect from Switzerland ».

While in Geneva, Ian Logan, Director General of Lausanne 2020, said:

« For athletes and their teams, Genève Aéroport is the official gateway to the region, from neighbouring France, Champéry and Vallée de Joux to Lausanne and the Vaud Alps. This entry point marks the first page in their Olympic adventure but also the final moments of their stay in Switzerland. »
