Genève Aéroport will host the next ACI meeting

27.06.2019

Genève Aéroport is delighted to host the next Airport Council International (ACI) general meeting from the 16 to 18 June 2020. At the 2019 meeting in Cyprus, a historic agreement was signed by 194 airports to meet the goal of Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2050. Genève Aéroport will put together an action plan which will be presented during the general meeting to be held at the airport next year.

Genève Aéroport is an active and important member of ACI Europe, based in Brussels. Representing over 500 airports throughout Europe, the association presents the expectations and demands of its members to European and national authorities.

The main discussions at the 2019 general meeting, which has just concluded, were the rise of low-cost flights, climate change, and safety and sustainability in the airport. At the meeting, Genève Aéroport signed a resolution for Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050. It has up until the next general meeting to draw up a realistic action plan that will enable the airport to work towards achieving this goal, and even reach it. The main features of the roadmap will involve abandoning the use of fossil fuels for heating and cooling, transport on the tarmac and outdoors, energy efficiency and the CO2 emissions of the airport infrastructure and that of airlines and their activities on site.

Director General, André Schneider said: « In 2020, Genève Aéroport will celebrate one hundred years since the inauguration of its 137 hectare airfield in 1920. We are therefore particularly pleased to be hosting the next ACI general meeting. Together we will imagine and validate our ambitious and practical actions that aim to protect the environment, while fighting different forms of pollution notably linked to noise, air and water. We have already engaged in environmental management; however in the future, we are going to take this a step further. The focus will strongly be on the social responsibility and sustainable development of airports to take better care of the planet in a context of international exchange. »
