Exemplary in energy: Genève Aéroport, a pioneer in solar panels

20.06.2019

Since 2016, Genève Aéroport has participated in the Confederation’s Exemplary in Energy initiative, alongside ten public1, cantonal and municipal players. The goal is to increase the energy efficiency by 25% from 2006 to 2020 within the federal administration and public companies through an action plan targeting four areas: buildings, mobility and data centres, green IT and promotion of renewable energies. By the end of 2018, the players in this action plan had already exceeded the 2020 efficiency target, with an increase in energy efficiency of 30,2% on average.

Combining words with action, Genève Aéroport is committed to increasing its energy efficiency: on the airport site, the savings accumulated since 2009 amount to nearly 9.9 GWh, which represents the annual consumption of 4’200 households. The latest example is the implementation on Thursday, 20 June 2019 of a new surface area of photovoltaic panels on the Check-in roof space, in collaboration with Services Industriels de Genève (SIG), to bring the total to 13’500 m².

Genève Aéroport is a committed member of the Exemplary in Energy initiative. Thanks to the partnership with SIG, the potential of photovoltaic installations is enhanced and the share of renewable energies increased. It demonstrates how ambitious projects can be implemented within a partnership without overlooking the core competencies of each player.

Claudio Menn, Exemplary in Energy project manager, notes that "the constant increase in photovoltaic capacity and energy efficiency achieved at Genève Aéroport is remarkable and exemplary".

Less CO2 emissions

When replacing existing heaters, the ten participants in the Exemplary in Energy initiative1 switched from fossil fuels to renewable energies. In the majority of cases, employees prefer to use rail rather than air routes for their business trips if their destination does not exceed a maximum of five hours by train. In computing, the goal is to contribute to lower grey energy consumption.
