A New Baggage Logistics Centre at Genève Aéroport

26.09.2019

Genève Aéroport put the foundation stone in place for its new Baggage Logistics Centre on Thursday 26th September in the presence of Serge Dal Busco, State Councillor in charge of the Infrastructure Department, Corine Moinat, President of the Board of Directors of Genève Aéroport and André Schneider, Chief Executive. The airport is investing 270 million francs in this highly complex project, which is essential for passenger security.

A high-performing, innovative and more environmentally friendly Baggage Logistics Centre is what Genève Aéroport can expect by the end of 2022. The processing of hold baggage plays a crucial role in airport operations; the current system therefore needs to be replaced.

Obsolete equipment will cause maintenance problems over the coming years. The main sorting system, for example, has been in use since 1994. Furthermore, Genève Aéroport needs to comply with European standards regarding security by installing the latest-generation scanners (EDS standard 3). The current scanners (standard 2) will no longer meet the new requirements for screening hold baggage from 1st September 2022.

Innovative Baggage Logistics Centre

The airport is therefore investing 270 million francs in its new Baggage Logistics Centre located between the terminal and the current baggage sorting centre. The system will provide new functions such as the Early Bag Storage (EBS), which enables passengers to check in baggage in advance. The Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS), a solution that enables baggage to be tracked in real-time, will also be improved with the Optical Characters Recognition (OCR) screening system. This function will reduce the number of unrecognised luggage.

Genève Aéroport pursues an environmental policy that is committed to reducing the environmental impact of airport activities. The Baggage Logistics Centre is a perfect example of this, as the construction process and industrial equipment have been designed to meet, following a partnership with GeniLac, 90% of heating requirements autonomously. Moreover, a hundred geothermal probes will be installed, as well as 1,100 m2 of solar panels and 7,718 m2 of green roofs.

Entirely funded by the airport, this project, initiated on 8th April 2019, is highly complex. In addition to the technical challenges, the work will take place while the current baggage sorting system is in use and all airport operations are maintained. The work schedule will have to be rigorously upheld for the system to comply with standards by 1st September 2022 at the latest.
