24 flags in the airport's centenary celebration colours will be flying on the Mont Blanc bridge until September 20. After the confinement brought on by the Covid-19 epidemic, this symbolic event relaunches the festivities of the centenary. Other events will follow in the coming months: conferences, debates, photography exhibitions and more...
The year 2020 was set to be a particularly festive year for Genève Aéroport with centenary celebrations planned for the whole year. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 epidemic put celebrations on hold, with many events being cancelled or postponed. Nevertheless, the airport has managed to keep several flagship events running between now and the end of the year! The kick off began on 14 September with the installation of the flags in the colours of the centenary, to be displayed throughout the week on the Mont Blanc bridge.
From Friday 25 September until October 2, the Château de Voltaire Orangery (in neighbouring France) will host a photography exhibition, paying tribute to the agreement signed between France and Switzerland in 1956. This agreement, which included an exchange of 42 hectares of land, enabled Geneva Airport to carry out the work needed to extend its runway from 2 km to 3.9 km. This was necessary in order to accommodate larger DC8 type aircraft. The creation of an area in the airport dedicated to flights to France was part of this agreement. Authorities from both countries will celebrate the agreement at the opening of the exhibition.
Genève Aéroport is partnering with the University of Geneva to organise a series of conferences and debates in autumn 2020. The first will take place on 13 October 2020, with a very timely theme: «How can airports help fight the spread of disease?». Since March, air traffic has been severely affected, with the Covid-19 epidemic having an extreme impact on airport activity. A round table will bring together scientists (including Didier Pittet and Antoine Flahault, professors at the University of Geneva) as well as aviation specialists.
At a second conference on December 17, easyJet, SWISS and Genève Aéroport will attempt to answer the question: «Zero carbon: myth or reality?»
From 13 to 14 November 2020, Genève Aéroport will have the honour of being a partner of the next Climathon organised by Impact Hub! The event is set to take place in Sécheron on the Biotech campus. Around one hundred* participants will have 24 hours to develop concrete solutions for local issues on the climate and future. They will receive expert support and specific criteria for developing their projects.
Finally, a large range of products commemorating the centenary of Genève Aéroport are on sale in airport kiosks and on our online store. Among the items is a limited edition Swiss Made watch to mark the occasion. Produced by a family-run company, the watch is suitable for both men and women. Another signature product is the book, 100 ans Genève Aéroport. This commemorative work follows 100 years of innovation and never-before-seen images, archival videos and text. Other accessories in the colours of the centenary celebration are also available: Tekoe tea, beach towel, cap, and a 100% recycled cotton shopping bag.
